Create Your Rhythm

We embrace a whole child approach to education and believe firmly in learning as a social and ongoing process that lasts a lifetime. We believe that knowledge is a process, not an endpoint, and we design our program accordingly.

We Guide Differently

At One City, scholars are empowered to create their own rhythm by crafting their personal high school experience with mentors by their side.

Our teachers and support staff work with each individual scholar to help them determine their interests, passions, and future path. Through a regular feedback and reflection cycle, teachers and scholars partner together in a journey of increasing knowledge on a daily basis. Scholars choose their seminars each trimester, from multidisciplinary seminars such as Unsolved American Mysteries, Afrofuturism, and Culture & Cuisine to stand-alone courses such as Studio Art 101 and Contemporary Dance. One City Preparatory Academy scholars will participate in the leadership and life skills program “Leader in Me” as well as engage in job shadows, apprenticeships, and internships.

After each trimester, high school scholars will choose week-long workshops designed to deep dive into a subject of subjects of interest, including life skills, health, and financial literacy. Additionally, one day each week affords a change in routine by offering courses within Project Lead the Way, Leader in Me, and Reconstruction as well as extended activities, athletics, and service work.

We Believe Differently

We believe that knowledge is a social process and we design our program accordingly.

One City Schools believes a 2-generation model is critical to student success. We work hand-in-hand with parents and the broader community to ensure our students have the fundamental capacity to succeed in school and life from cradle to career, and become the innovators and effective leaders we will need them to be in the future. Through the Families and School Together, Leader in Me, and school-sponsored events, One City provides numerous opportunities throughout the year for family engagement.

Within the school day, emphasis is placed on collaboration and cooperative learning. Scholars are encouraged to push each other in their learning and to engage in class discussions and projects on a daily basis. Our high school scholars will pursue community service projects, engage in job shadows, apprenticeships, and internships, and develop a deep understanding of how the community surrounds them with love and support. We know that together, we grow stronger every day.

We Assess Differently

Through five learning domains (Communication Arts, Math, STEM: Science & Design, Artistic, Civic, & Global Engagement, and Life Readiness), scholars are assessed for mastery in a variety of foundational credits throughout their high school experience. Each trimester’s offered multidisciplinary seminars will assess a variety of foundational credits.

Learning is a lifelong process, not an endpoint to be measured by a multiple choice exam. We believe that to learn deeply and enduringly, we need to truly experience the learning and grapple with the challenges. We keep our focus where it belongs: on persistence to mastery through the valuable process of feedback, reflection, and iteration.

We strive to make school productive and useful as well as a true reflection of the real world. When our scholars encounter challenges, we want them to embrace the opportunity to try out solutions. We are preparing our scholars for a world we have not yet imagined and believe we can only do so by preparing them to be thinkers, collaborators, and risk takers.

We are members of the Mastery Transcript Consortium, a growing network of public and private schools who are introducing a digital high school transcript that opens up opportunity for each and every student — from all backgrounds, locations, and types of schools — to have their unique strengths, abilities, interests, and histories fostered, understood, and celebrated.

We schedule differently

Our scholars experience varied opportunities for learning throughout the course of a day, a week, and a year.

Our high school courses are offered on a trimester basis, with a one-week workshop between each trimester. Each trimester’s course offerings are a mix of multidisciplinary seminars (e.g. Afrofuturism, America’s Unsolved Mysteries, How the Word is Passed) and subject-focused seminars (e.g., Studio Art 101, Contemporary Dance).

Workshops and the extended school year summer session provide opportunities for apprenticeships and internships as well as specific courses such as Driver’s Education, Financial Literacy, and passion-specific such as Turntablism 101 (where scholars will learn how to program and run our DJ Booth). Scholars ready to pursue college credits may do so through dual credit offerings at One City or through online coursework with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (including Spanish I and II).

Every day, scholars have opportunities for mathematics, community service, and clubs and athletics. We begin each day with a healthy and prepared breakfast cooked by our master chef and a centering “crew” activity to set intentions for the day. Additionally, one day each week affords a change in routine by offering courses within Project Lead the Way, Leader in Me, and Reconstruction as well as extended activities, athletics, and service work.
